The Bridget Smith House
in Mine Hill, NJ
In stark contrast to the elegant Ford-Faesch
Manor House stands the lovely restored Bridget Smith
cottage in Mine Hill. This small former two family home
was the norm for the humble mining families of the
region. Other miners homes may also be viewed from the
outside in Hibernia, near the library, which was formerly a
Methodist Church attended by the mining families.
The Bridget Smith House is located at 124
Randolph Avenue in Mine Hill and is well worth a visit.
The home's namesake was the widow of an Irish
immigrant miner and the area was known as Irishtown.
Many of the Irish familes rest in peace in the old cemetery
across from the church near St. Clare's hospital. The house
is open on a limited schedule, and inquiries locally are
best made in advance. The property is maintained by the
Ferromonte Historical Society of Mine Hill. It should be
noted that Ferromonte is Mine Hill in Italian.
Hopefully, we can plan a trip there for our society
another time. It is remarkable at how much history is so
close at hand and worth the effort to investigate and share
with others.

CORNISH CURIOSITIES
Here’s an interesting article from the London Cornish
Association Newsletter, Spring 2006.

According to www.familytreedna.com , a website sponsored by National Geographic
Society, IBM and the Waitt Family Foundation “genealogy by genetics is the greatest addition to genealogy since the creation of the
family tree.”
They explain that DNA is the carrier of our genetic information and is passed down from generation to generation through
the cells in our bodies. All cells except red blood cells contain a copy of our DNA from both mother and fathers. There have been
many searches for DNA of historical figures such as Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin. But Family Tree DNA and other
companies are building data bases about Native Americans, and those of African ancestry, Jewish ancestry, Irish ancestry and on and
on. It is a fascinating subject.
According to the New York Times, Sunday, February 5, 2006, you obtain a kit which contains toothbrushlike scrapers, a
collection of tubes and instructions on how to take a swab from inside of the cheek. The samples are mailed to the lab where
scientists analyze the DNA markers or genetic traits for a price of course. The cost ranges from $100 to $900. It is for the
individual to decide the value of this testing. The results are sent to the consumer to further their research.
This research is in the early beginnings with a data base of about 53,000 samples by Family Tree DNA, a small sampling
considering the world’s population. The efforts of many scientists may someday develop a massive project that will be useful to
anyone doing genealogical research. It is an exciting new field for family research.

President’s Report
Ann Trezona Dalrymple
Do you remember when anyone who was doing family research followed the
cemetery and paper records trail in town halls and state houses? This was the way
my grandmother did extensive genealogy. Grandfather would patiently take her all
over northern New York State following her genealogy trail and visiting any relatives
who might have a clue as to any family stories. As a result, we have a wonderful
history of that side of the family.
Well, times have certainly changed. We might need to use the same
methods at times but now the computer has really become important for in-depth
research. All of us have had that “aha” experience when we discover a fact that
confirms what we had really suspected. It is most exciting!
But now there is a new tool to help those who are desperate to confirm by
science family relationships. We have all seen the importance of DNA history in the
courts of our land but now we are hearing about DNA being used in family research.

The parish of Sithney (sometimes called St. Bartholomew)
is situated in the deanery and Hundred of Kerrier. It is bounded on
the north by Crowan, on the east by Wendron and Helston and the
Looe Pool which separates it from Gunwalloe, on the south by the
sea and on the west by Breage. It is named after the St. Sezni.
When God was deciding which saint was going to be the patron
saint of what, he offered to make St. Sezni the patron saint of
young women. The saint moaned, saying to God, I shall never get
any peace then! I’d rather be saint of mad or sick dogs. It is said
that the water from the well of St. Sezni can cure madness and over
the centuries, people have drunk from the well in this belief. The
parish lies about three miles north west of the town of Helston in a
mainly agricultural area. In the 19th Century there were at least
eight tin mines in the area, none of which are working today. There
are the ruins of an old farmhouse Plane-an-Gwary, meaning ‘place
of the plays’. Here Cornish Miracle plays were acted in medieval
times, and later Cornish wrestlers were seen here on feast and fair
day.
The principal villages are the Churchtown, Porthleven, St.
Johns, Penrose, Mellangoose, Lower Prospidnick, Dowga, Sithney
Common, Sithney Green, Coverack Bridges, Crown Town (or
Gudna) Lowertown, Chyreen and Lower Tregadjack. Porthleven,
which was originally part of this parish became a separate parish in
1846.
THE PARISH OF
SITHNEY, CORNWALL
This information is from the website of
Damien Willey, who as OPC (online ParishClerk)
covers the three parishes of Sithney, Porthleven and
Constantine.
Look for it at:
www.rootsweb.com/~engcopc
The pictures are by Steve Beasley. Bill
O’Reilly built the website.
I just took a quick look at this site for
Sithney and found and just what I knew should be
there: the baptism of William Williams RODDA in
1845. This was my great grandfather Edward
Williams RODDA’s younger brother. And he is the
great grandfather of members Donald and James
RODDA.
Looking over the Connecting Cornish
Cousins Program, I see that there at least ten CHSE
members whose ancestors came from Sithney.
The parish records are listed in a easy-toread
format. The links are in specific groups of
years, i.e. 1666-1695, 1695-1737. The longer lists
are broken down into surname groups, i.e. A-H, PR,
I-O and S-Z. You may search the names on the
marriage lists by bride or groom.
Included are:
Baptisms from 1666 to 1906.
Marriages from 1691 to 1906
Burials from 1663 to 1906.
Damien has another website at:
www.familytreesonline.co.uk.
In her words, “its basic aim is to provide a simple
database of free genealogy resources, on a
global scale. It’s only been going since
Valentine’s Day, so is still quite small, though
growing rapidly.”
I’m thankful for people like Damien who make
family research so much easier for me.

News release from the London Cornish Society
Helston Flora Dance CD-Single Launched
In response to an overwhelming number of requests from across the world, Helston Town Band has produced a CD-single version of
its own authentic Flora Dance, ready to hit the shelves in time for Helston Flora Day on May 6th 2006.
Time and time again, the band has received requests from people eager to own their own copies of the Flora Dance, in particular from
proud Helstonians who have moved away from the county, including some who have emigrated to New Zealand, Australia and
America. Other requests have come from parents of Helston school children keen to practise their dance steps; university students
trying to explain the concept of Flora Day to friends; and from brass band enthusiasts across the world.
The CD-single of the Flora Dance performed by Helston Town Band, under Musical Director John Hitchens, is priced at just £5. In
addition to the music, BBC Spotlight presenter Rebecca Wills, herself a Helstonian provides her own personal account of Flora Day
on the CD. She also interviews Musical Director John Hitchens, and Chairman of the Flora Day Committee, Leslie Collins, to
provide a highly informative and interesting account of this unique tradition. The CD will be a delight to own for anyone connected
with Helston in any shape or form.
Helston Town Band is extremely proud of its association with Helston Flora Day, when our 'quaint old Cornish town' throngs with
thousands of people. Brighouse and Rastrick Band recorded its own version of 'The Floral Dance' in 1977 with the help of Terry
Wogan, which reached No. 2 in the singles chart. But it is only Helston Town Band who can claim ownership of the authentic Flora
Dance.
The CD can be ordered via Helston Town Band website (www.helstontownband.co.uk ). Each
CD costs £5, plus £1 to cover post and packaging. We will be in a position to send out CDs by 27 April (and hopefully earlier!).
The band is expecting high demand for this CD in the run up to Flora Day, and urges interested parties to order as soon as possible!

Nancegollan, near Helston,
Feb. 25, 1916
Dear Annie,
No doubt that you will be surprised to get a letter from me, but I am writing for the uncles, to let
you know about the condition of the both aunties. Knowing that you have heard from your brother the sad
news of their death. Well, dear, as you know that they have been very delicate for some time, but we never
thought that they would have both gone from us so soon; it's a great blow to us all. And they were very
united together. Aunty Mary had taken her bed first, and only ill a few days, and passed away very peacefully at
half past six in the morning, and poor Aunty Margaret felt the shock so bad that she was very ill all that day
and through the night her prayers was [sic] answered, that she might follow her sister, who is only gone
on a little way before her to Heaven, and that she would soon be meeting her, to be with Christ which is
better.
And at 10 o'clock that morning, she passed away in her sleep. But the uncles felt it very hard, and it's
a great trouble to them, poor souls, for they are left very lonely and sad. But I don't suppose that I need to
give you the full detail of the funeral, no doubt your brother had sent on the paper to you about it. It have
[sic] never been known for a very long time of two sisters being buried together, it was an awful sad sight,
and hundreds of people to the funeral, and scarcely a dry eye to be seen there, for they were both liked so
well, eveywhere they did go. Always bright and cheerful, and a kind word for everyone.
Well, dear, I am trying to do the very best that I can for the uncles, to make them comfortable in
their trouble. I came up to Nancegollan a few days after the funeral with a friend of mine, and we have been
coming to and fro from Hayle ever since. We stay for a week or two, and then go home and give our parents a
helping hand, and then we are off the Nancegollan again, to do some more cooking for the uncles, and in the
evenings we sit down and do some mending for them, and darn their stockings for them as well, so that we
may keep them as tidy as the both aunties did. But I feel the aunties missing very much, for I often been
[sic] with them from a little girl, and when I am left alone in the house I fancy them everywhere I go. And
sometimes I can hardly realise that they are both gone from us, in so short a time.
Well, dear, we cannot find your address that Aunt Margaret had when writing you, and I hope you will
forgive me in writing you as Annie, for we cannot not [sic] think of your name, and we are enclosing this
letter to your brother that he may address it, and forward it on to you. I will conclude for the time, hoping
you are all well, as it leaves us all at the present time of writing.
The uncles both wish me to remember them both to you all.
I remain,
Your Sincere Friends,
S. J. & E. R. Bolitho
P.S. We are enclosing two of the mourning cards to you.

We also received copies of a couple of lovely old Christmas postcards, which we hope we can reproduce in our December
issue. She saved many family items, which were inherited by her nephew and were submitted to us by our member Gerry De
Lazier, to whom we are most grateful for sharing with us. [Ed.]

A copy of the mourning card
for Margaret Ann Bolitho is reproduced
here. We do not have one for her sister
Mary. They were the daughters of
Thomas and Mary Ann Bolitho of
Nancegollan, Cornwall. They are listed
on their parents' gravestone as well.
The Annie to whom the letter is
written was Ann Donald, daughter of John and
Grace Donald of Bloomingdale, NJ. Her brother
was William Donald.
UNITED in life, united in death,—they have gone!
‘Twas Jesus that called them away;
They have gone to the Lord who redeemed them
From night to the splendour of day.
We cannot, Lord, thy purpose see,
But all is well that’s done by Thee.

CORNISH HERO REMEMBERED: A
TRIBUTE TO RICK RESCORLA
It is most difficult to begin writing about someone
you have never met, especially someone who was around but
never had the opportunity to meet. Many others have most
eloquently taken pen in hand and brought to light the story
and retelling of the various facets of a man who loomed large
but was strong enough to disdain fame and glory. This in
itself is truly inspiring, as such qualities are rare but most
admirable.
Rick Rescorla was a member of our society and
doubtless had a deep love of his roots in Cornwall. He was a
native of Hayle, born in 1939 as Cyril Richard Rescorla. And
Hayle was fond of its son too. After his death, Hayle lovingly
honored his memory with an appropriate memorial.
We had a program presented by Rick's widow Susan
in March 2003, which many of us still remember. This is
only a brief outline of some of the facts of Rick Rescorla's
life, and we recommend that you visit an interesting website
for more details and links: www.rickrescorla.com
. There are four books
referenced on the website, and that information will follow at
the end of this article.
Volume 12 Number
Rescorla was drawn to adventure. He began his quest by
joining the paratroopers in the British army, seeing action
in Cyprus while still a teenager. This followed a stint in
Northern Rhodesia (now the country of Zambia in Africa)
where he seemed to have acquired the habit of running
barefoot to toughen his feet and soles [and perhaps his
soul?]. A tour with the London Police followed, but his
strivings led him to America where he had the chance to
fight communists by joining the US army and head to
Vietnam. Rising from the enlisted ranks through OCS in
1965 he led his men fearlessly though many engagements.
He earned many medals for his exploits, which he did not
advertise. His famous picture while in combat in Vietnam
appears on the jacket of one of the books mentioned below,
and became the basis for a lifesize bronze memorial later
dedicated to his memory. This is a famous example of the
lean, green, fighting machine that inspires the legendary GI
Joe image. Even after leaving Vietnam, he remained in the
National Guard and rose to the rank of Colonel. He was
indeed a warrior.
But Rick had another side as well. Enrolling under
the GI Bill he received an undergraduate degree in literature
and writing. He loved quoting the classics, and delved in
playwriting, and loved to sing as well. He later went on to
receive a law degree and taught for a while, but academia
was not his cup of tea. He entered the field of security and
rose to the head of security at Morgan-Stanley, one of the
principle tenants at the World Trade Center. Even suffering
though treatment for cancer did not slow him down in his
persuit of excellence in all he did.
