Dynargh - Welcome
NJ's Own Cornish Mining Communities
By 1799, the mine and ironworks at Mount Hope employed two hundred, including women and children. Mining villages sprang up throughout the nineteenth century including places with names like Teabo, Richard Mine and Oreland. Hibernia and Mount Hope grew to become large mining communities. Both operations eventually included multiple mines as well as rail lines that would link them to the Morris Canal and the Morris and Essex Railroad in what is now Rockaway Borough. By the last quarter of the nineteenth century two hundred separate mining operations existed throughout the township. Miners came from diverse ethnic backgrounds. They included Germans, Cornish, Welsh, Irish, and later, Slovaks, Poles and Hungarians. The last Rockaway Township mine, located in Mount Hope, closed in 1978.
